Department of geological engineering
Ever since its foundation in 1952, the Department of Geological Engineering devoted to the investigation of crustal information for the identification, occurrence mechanism, prevention and mitigation of geological problems, as well as for the exploration, exploitation and utilization of geological resources. This department researches in 3 areas including Engineering Geology (EG), Earth Exploration and Information Technology (EEIT), and Geological Resource Exploration Engineering(GREE). EG researches formation mechanism of geological hazards and their mitigation, soil mechanics and engineering in special soil mass, rock mechanics and rock mass engineering, earth exploration and information technology, especially related to railway route selection issues in these areas. EEIT studies the theories, methods and technologies of airborne and surface geophysical exploration, and provides data for the division of geological structure, the identification of geological body and the determination of physical and mechanical parameters of rock and soil mass. GREE focuses the research of unconventional resources including their formation mechanism, exploration method and associated geological engineering.New opportunities arise in these researches due to the initiative of ONE BELT ONE ROAD, which allows and encourages the study on the theory, method, technique, and instruments in above areas.
Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics
As a department ofthe Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering, which covers the areas of environmental engineering, fire protection engineering, geological engineering and Geomatic engineering, we strive for a deeper understanding ofSurveying and Geoinformatics. We aim at engineering solutions and technological innovation. As scientists, we reach deeper insights into the processes of photogrammetry and remote sensing, precise engineering survey, and geographic information system. As engineers, we observe, measure and model the most subtle changes of terrain and infrastructure with the most modern sensors at the highest precision. We are activelyinvolved in the most challenging and far-reaching high-speed railway development project in the world.
As an interdisciplinary network of survey engineering, Remote Sensing, andgeographical information science,We combine scientific methods and engineering competencies to develop Geoinformatics infrastructure and advanced space information technology. We discover chances and opportunities. We visualize, explain and predict risks, help to avoid disaster and prepare for the worst case.
Department of Environmental Science and Engineering
The Department of Environmental Engineering (Southwest Jiaotong University) can be originally dated back to the Institute of Environmental Protection, established at 1984. The Department was integrated with Department of Surveying and Geology to form a Faculty as “Geosciences and Environmental Engineering” at 2011. There are three research areas of the Department, such as green transportation, environmental pollution control, environmental chemistry and monitoring, and environmental planning and management. Currently, there are 35 staffs served in this Department, including 9 Professors and 15 Associate Professors. The Department has been awarded by one Provincial/Ministry Second Prize of Technology Progress, five Third Prize of Technology Progress and ten other prizes, respectively. About 200 research projects related to wastewater, solid waste treatment etc., have been applied to engineering practice.
Department of Fire Protection Engineering
Ever since its foundation in 2004, the Department of Fire Protection Engineering devoted to building a safer world and minimizing the loss of human lives and properties in fires. We study how to by prevent their occurrence through exploring cutting edge technology and strive for a better understanding of their development and consequences We are using full-scale test or reduced scale experiments and the latest computational fluid dynamics simulations. After years’ development, we have a team of well experienced and highly qualified faculty members, including two professors, four associate professors, and 11 lecturers, and 88% of them have a doctorate degree. We have developed three areas of strength, i.e., building fire protection, infrastructure and tunnel fire dynamic and flame retardant technology. The Department has two experimental centers covering an area of around 2000m2and a total asset of more than 20 million, including gas analyzer, multi-point data acquisition instrument, anemometers, thermal radiation instrument, etc. Our faculty had undertaken or participated in the National Key Research and Development Program, the National "863" Program Project, the National "973" Program Project, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other national/provincial and municipal projects.
