On November 10, 2016, Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering (FGEE) held a fire protection education lecture at X4359.The speaker was Junmin Chen (associate professor, dean assistant) who is a committee of the Fire Protection Teaching Guidance Commission and deputy director of planning department of Sichuan Province Environment Engineering association. Yougang Fu (deputy party secretary of FGEE) hosted the lecture, class leaders and dormitory representatives attended.
Fu said: “November is the safety education month, because autumn and winter are the high-incidence seasons for fire, many fire hazards still exists in our daily life, everyone should pay more attention on this matter. Besides, this lecture is held mainly to raise our awareness and teach the way we act when a fire occurs.”
Then, Chen introduced the reasons of several dormitory fires------using heating appliance improperly, smoking and ignoring emergency measures. He also reminded students that dormitory, teaching building, library and dining hall are fire prone places, so that students should be careful and pay more attention on firefighting devices there. Professor Chen taught some useful methods as well, for example, if you are inside a building, the first thing you need to do is know the exits’ location, keep calm and follow the instructions of the staff. If you are outside of a building, you should call the police as soon as you notice a fire, tell them the accurate fire position and cause, after police reaching the building, you should tell the conditions of firefighting devices, combustible substance inside and the location of fire water reservoirs, when the fire is under control, you also need to cooperate with them to do fire assertion.
Besides, Chen introduced the classification of fire extinguishers, how to use them and some tips of using them. For instance, different fire extinguishers are used when facing different types of fire, and before using them, we should check if the shell looks normal, if yes, we can unplug the safety pin and use them.
Finally, Professor Chen emphasized that when fire occurs, everyone must calm down and follow the instructions to get out of buildings as soon as possible. However, if you get trapped, please try your best to protect yourself and wait for firefighters.
