August 30th-September 8th, 2015, Prof. Hu Xie attended the 16th Symposium on the Topography and Surface Processes of the Taiwan Strait, which sponsored by the Taiwanese university, with nearly 100 participants from nearly 10 universities and research institutes on both sides of the strait. Topics of the meeting include: 1 surface processes and environmental evolution, 2 natural disasters and risk management, 3 human engineering activities and environmental geology, 4 environmental conservation and sustainable development, 5 earthquake mitigation and reconstruction management.
Prof. Hu has made an academic report entitled "Several key issues in debris flow exploration and design in the Wenchuan earthquake area", which is based on the characteristics and harmfulness of the major debris flow disaster since the 2008 5.12 mega-earthquakes in Wenchuan, Sichuan Province. Combined with the effect of controlling debris flow disaster in the earthquake, the report systematically summarized the methods of estimating the size of loose objects, the rationality of blocking coefficients and the corresponding flow rate, and the engineering design concepts in the process of debris flow exploration and design in the earthquake zone. The academic report was concerned by scholars from Taiwan University and Taiwan Normal University. Combined with the Lan Yangxi "Soudilleux" typhoon-induced large-type debris flow disaster in Yilan County, Taiwan (August 8, 2015), particularly, it was discussed extensively on how to scientifically design and effectively manage debris flow control project.
Taiwan has developed a variety of landforms, various types of disasters, many earthquakes, tectonic movements caused by various types of geological hazards and landforms. During the academic seminar, cross-Straits scholars jointly investigated the Lan Yangxi fault and alluvial fan topography, the special large-scale debris flow control and the Taroko Alpine Canyon Landform, the dangerous rock collapse and the Yilan in the Hualian area, and discussed the effective treatment of all kinds of geologic disasters, and reached many common understandings.
