Dr. Bo Wu Made Academic Report for Our Teachers and Students

On March 13, 2017, Dr. Bo Wu, associate professor of the Department of Land Surveying & Geo-Informatics (LSGI), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, visited our faculty. He made a wonderful academic report titled “Pixel-level 3D Surface Reconstruction-Applications in 3-D Surveying and Mapping for Urban Areas and Moon” for our teachers and students in room X4520. This report was chaired by Prof. Hua Qi, vice president of our faculty.

Dr. Wu is currently the deputy chairman of department research committee and the program leader of MSc in Geomatics in LSGI.He received his Ph.D. degree in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from Wuhan University, China in 2006. During the period from July 2006 to July 2008, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at The Ohio State University, USA, and participated in Mars and lunar exploration program funded by NASA. In 2009, He joined in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he has being engaging in a variety of research topics, including photogrammetry and robotic vision, planetary mapping and planetary science, and GIS and applications. He was the vice present of Hong Kong Geographic Information System Association during 2011-2012, and the co-chair of ISPRS Working Group II/6 - Geo-Visualization and Virtual Reality during 2010-2016. He is currently the council member of Hong Kong Society for Remote Sensing, the secretary of ISPRS Working Group III/II - Planetary Remote Sensing and Mapping, and the editorial board member of The Photogrammetric Record journal.

Dr. Wu gave a brief introduction to LSGI and its policy for recruiting of prospective students firstly, and then he had a discussion with attendants about innovation ability training and mainland students' adaptation to life and study in Hong Kong. He expressed his hope that LSGI could strengthen cooperation with our faculty in the aspect of the student exchange programs in the future. Afterwards, Dr.Wu gave his academic speech by presenting image matching as the starting point. He introduced the development of image matching algorithms, and analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of various methods based a large number of experiments. Furthermore, Dr. Wu presented his research group's achievements for more than a decade.
