Research Interests

My first interest is the experimental and numerical study of fire dynamics and the propagation of smoke control in tunnels, particularly catastrophic fires in long & tilted tunnels. We found, for the first time, that fires could self-extinct in long tunnel with natural ventilation. Then we studied the impact of tunnel slopes, lengths, as well as sealing ratios on the self-extinction behavior. Recently, we are exploring the mechanism of self-extinction, by using numerical simulation and experiment data.

The second interest is study the competitive evacuation behavior for panic evacuees at extreme conditions, such as fires or similar emergencies. I carried out a series of innovative experiments by using mice in lieu of people for ethic issue to explore the flow characteristics of competitive escape. I also developed numerical model based on granular dynamics and social-force model. We explored the impact of exits on the efficiency of evacuation.

The last interest is the large-scale evacuation planning for urban area and had developed macro-evacuation modeling based on time-varying dynamic network, which can optimize the evacuation destinations, schedules and routes simultaneously.
